Review: Energems, A Chocolate Candy Coated Energy Supplement
**Disclosure: This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Energems.**
I recently had the opportunity to review Energems, a new energy supplement that is basically a mix between an energy drink and an M&M. I don’t normally eat M&M’s or drink energy drinks, but I do have situations where they come in handy. One is long road trips, which I just happened to go on this past weekend while driving from LA to San Francisco.
Here’s the lowdown on Energems. They are made with real milk chocolate and are infused with energy by using caffeine, B vitamins and a proprietary energy mix. One serving (three gems aka pieces of chocolate candy) is the equivalent of one energy drink. There are three servings per box.
The first flavor I tried was the peanut butter blast. It was good. The Energems are a bit bigger than an M&M and about the size of a Mentos candy. They taste chocolatey and have a hard shell candy coating like an M & M. They also had a bit of an aftertaste that kind of tasted like a Redbull. It wasn’t gross, but it also reminded me that I was having an energy supplement and not a piece of candy. The proprietary energy mix has taurine in it (which is also in Redbull) so I’m guessing that is what the taste must have been.
I was planning to only eat 3 gems but they were kind of addicting and next thing I knew I ate the whole box (45 calories per serving x 3 servings = 135 calories + the equivalent of 3 energy drinks. Oops. It was late at night and I had to drive to my parents house to drop off Kona before our road trip so I felt like I needed a little extra boost. I was a bit worried that I was going to be extra hyper on my drive, but I wasn’t. I was pretty tired when I ate them and I noticed I perked up a bit for my drive. I don’t think I’ll ever try an entire box again, but it was quite an introduction to the product. One serving of Energems has about 75 mg of caffeine, which is comparable to one cup of coffee. So I had three cups of coffee’s worth of caffeine and I wasn’t too jittery. A good sign.
The next kind of Energems I tried was the mint flavor. It was really good and reminded me of those mint pastel candies I used to have around Easter time when I was a kid. They did have that same energy drink flavored after taste, but I liked them better than the Peanut Butter Flavor.
The chocolate charge flavor was good and the energy drink aftertaste was still there but not as strong. I probably liked the Mint the best, then the chocolate, then the peanut butter.
I enjoyed having these little bursts of energy in the car during my 8 hour long road trip. I didn’t eat many more after the initial Peanut Butter and Mint flavors, but they are now safely stored in my center console in my car for the next road trip we take. I hope they don’t melt between now and then! Each box of Energems retails for about $2.99 each, so it’s a little bit cheaper to keep a box of these in your glove compartment rather than buying an energy drink at the gas station for long drives (yes, I keep an energy drink in my car in case I’m tired on a long drive. More on that in another post).
Overall I liked Energems and would use them again to help keep me alert on long road trips.
