Keeping Kona Safe from Fleas

Kona the Golden Retriever
Oh, Kona. She’s really been going through a lot lately since Baby Awesome was born. She is used to being the center of attention and now there’s a little human in the mix and she’s had to get used to sharing mom and dad’s attention. It’s definitely been an adjustment for her, but it’s been one that we think she’s been handling quite well.

Now that we have a baby in the house, my husband and I often talk about how we really don’t have one baby – we have two. In many ways Kona has been a first child to us, and this “fur baby” has prepared us for parenthood so well. She is a highly active dog and gets into everything. After all, she’s not even two years old yet! We like to joke that we have a newborn AND a toddler in our house.

A couple weeks ago, Kona was scratching a lot in her back area and licking her paws. I thought it was a sign of stress or anxiety because of the new baby. I didn’t think much of it but then I noticed she had an ear infection. This was her first one ever (it was not pretty) so I took her to the vet to get looked at.

When the vet examined Kona, she said her itching could be due to one of the following:

1) Food Allergy (eek, maybe she’s sensitive to gluten like me)

2) Fleas

Since the temperature has reached record-breaking levels for this time of year here in SoCal recently, the vet suggested that the change in temperature could make Kona more prone to getting fleas. She also noticed the area where Kona was scratching is generally related to fleas as well so she suggested I use a flea control product. Apparently flea and tick outbreaks are triggered by temperature and humidity and become widespread when temperatures are above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Oy. I mentioned that I had received a 3-month supply of Adams™ Flea & Tick Control Products for dogs and the vet said I could try it out on Kona as a preventative method.

Kona the golden and Adams flea control
The Adams™ for Dogs Flea & TickSpot On® with the Adams™ Smart Shield® applicator is different than other flea products I’ve tried because you directly put it on the dog’s skin. They say that applying directly onto the skin like this gets down to kill adult fleas and ticks as well as eggs. It’s so gross to think that Kona could have flea eggs all over her body! I’ve never used a topical flea & tick product on Kona before and I’m curious to see how it will work out.

Nearly 75 percent of U.S. pet households get at least one flea or tick outbreak per year (Kelton Flea & Tick Study, 2013) and we had two last year with Kona, so we should really be better about using a flea care product on her regularly. Adams™ brand includes a flea and tick cleansing shampoo and other products to help deter fleas and ticks from your home and yard. It’s nice to know there are products like this that are easily available over the counter. Adams™ Flea and Tick Control Products have been sold by vets for more than 30 years and are available at WalMart and other stores. Adams currently has an Adams Start Smart, Stay Smart sweepstakes going on where you can enter for a chance to win $2,500 by signing up for free flea & tick outbreak alerts from Adams™ Brand. Pretty cool!

So how did Kona do on the Adams™ Flea & Tick Control Products? It hasn’t been a full 30 days yet (you’re supposed to reapply every month) so it’s too soon to tell, but when I have more information on how the product worked I am planning on updating you all!

      Hey Nicole,

She’s doing alright. She just keeps scratching and licking her paws! Poor baby. How are your pups doing?
