Interview with K+ Organic Sports Drink Co-Founder Velana Colon
It’s really important to replenish fluids after you exercise. Over the years as I’ve been on my health journey I’ve been more aware of how much sugar can actually be found in recovery drinks that are supposed to help replenish these lost fluids. Last month I was introduced to a new brand called K+ Organic Sports Drink. They have designed an Organic Sports Drink that is formulated for young athletes. It’s not only for young athletes though – adults can drink it, too! I’ve tried all three of the flavors and I really like the taste. The Fruit Punch was my favorite. It’s made with natural flavors and sweeteners and it’s organic, too! As a breastfeeding mom I’ve been drinking these to help keep me hydrated when it’s hot out. K+ Organics also has a very interesting business story which I love being an entrepreneur myself. I had the opportunity to interview K+ Organic Sports Drink Co-Founder Velana Colon to learn a little more about the product and her experience. Check it out and learn more at the bottom about how you can win some K+ Organic Sports Drink to try for yourself!
What is K+ Organics?
K+ Organic Sports Drink is designed for young athletes and made with all natural flavors and coloring. It contains only natural and organic sweeteners, and best of all each drink is formulated with just the right levels of vitamins and minerals for your future MVP.
Is it just for kids? How old? Can adults drink it?
Anyone can drink and enjoy K+ Organic beverages, however it’s an electrolyte drink formulated with kids and teens in mind. The beverage can be enjoyed anytime but it’s best to drink after exercising or any sweat inducing activity. The concept behind electrolytes is to replenish fluids lost from exertion.
What flavors does it come in?
Fruit Punch, Lime and Orange.
What made you decide to create a sports drink specifically for kids?
We formulated K+ because we had to. With a combined six children across two families; we were both facing the same sugar battles with our growing athletes. Both our families were really fed up with all the “poor choice” beverages on the market so we decided to do something about it. We spent a lot of time researching and testing out all the best ingredients to put into a sports drink for a young athlete. We also wanted to create a beverage that was better for you than other leading brands but also tasted great.
We are thrilled with the results of K+ and everyone seems to really enjoy it. The company is growing fast and we look forward to offering our sports drink nationwide. We just launched shipping on our website and now everyone anywhere in the US can get an incredible alternative to other sports drinks on the market.

I think most people are surprised how good it tastes. When you think of something being a little healthier for you sometimes people think it’s not going to taste as good. I also don’t think most parents read food labels or understand what the quantities and ingredients mean and it can be confusing. I think if everyone saw how many scoops of sugar equals 26 grams – people would be in SHOCK.
Where can people find it?
You can find K+ Organic Sports Drink in Southern California at Gelsons and Bristol Farms and online at kplusorganics.com. We ship all across the U.S. and often offer discounts.
I think a lot of moms and dads are really busy and sometimes it’s just easier and less expensive to pack a juice box into a lunch bag. What some parents don’t realize is the high amount of sugar in one container of juice. It’s the same for sports drink. If you were to compare our ingredients compared to other leading brands you will see we are less than half the sugar and made from organic and natural ingredients.
If you could change one thing about what kids eat and drink, what would it be?
We have to reduce the amount of sugar and harmful chemicals our kids are consuming on a regular basis.
What should moms watch out for on labels when giving products to their kids?
Moms should watch out for High Fructose Corn Syrup, added artificial flavors and colors.
When should kids drink K+?
Following activity, kid athletes should drink enough fluid to replace sweat losses. This usually requires consuming approximately 1.5 L of fluid/kg of body weight lost. The consumption of sodium-containing fluids and snacks after exercise helps with rehydration by stimulating thirst and fluid retention.
Will you be announcing any new products in the near future?
We are exploring new products all the time. We are new start-up so it’s important for us to listen to our customers and what they want. We will be releasing a powdered form in the future and it will make K+ Organic Sports drink more portable and mixable for large containers at athletic events.

I always looking for healthy drinks for my little athlete!
I’ve never heard of this before. Sounds like an interesting products for kids / youth. We give our kids Nuun sometimes but that’s about it.
I haven’t seen these! Kids definitely deserve better options than…uh, shall I say the “leading brands”? Personally I drink Nuun Active because I don’t want a sweet drink and the sodium levels are actually high enough to be helpful unlike the…uh…leading brands. You know. 😀
this looks like a great product! I’ve not heard of it (In Iowa).
For long runs and races, I like to recover with Gatorade or PowerAde (I can do either) or even Nuun. I really needs the salt and the boost of electrolytes. Water just doesn’t do it for me. This would be great for my little guy, though. He’s pretty active, and while he is still in a place where water handles most of his needs, I would be wiling to add something a little more natural to the mix.
Hi velana! Congrats- this sounds amazing! I am a parent consultant and own http://www.tiaslightham.com
I host an expert interview every 6 weeks to help inform parents on multiple topics. Would you be willing for me to use this interview article and your bio/links, etc to feature you and your product? Pls let me know (tia@slightham.com) and hopefully we can collaborate! All the best, tia
I think it is good to have an electrolyte drink that you can trust. Interesting post. Thanks for the information about K+ as I have not seen it before.
I have not heard of this but I have a HS athlete and we are always looking for healthy ways to keep him hydrated. Will look for it!
What a cool product. There sure is a need for it!
As a former child athlete growing up in the VERY hot South, I wish this had been around when I was growing up!
Ooh! This sounds intriguing. I’ll have to remember this for my kids when sports start up again!
Have started buying this from Gelson’s….the red is the best, orange is yummy too. Love drinking this when I work out and run because I feel so much better than when just drinking water. (also that I’m not adding a bunch of extra sugar..) My kids like it too (& did not like the Gatorade organic stuff) so it’s a huge hit in my house!
My favorite is the fruit punch too!
I have never heard of these before, but I’m always willing to give something new a try, especially if its a healthier version of something that I already use.
