Interview with Nikki Leigh from Roads Trees and Honey Bees

I recently had a chance to interview Nikki Leigh, an actress and fitness influencer, and it was really interesting to hear what it was like for her to work on a feature film and talk about how she likes to be the one to engage directly with her social media following. Take a look below to read a little bit more about Nikki.

Q:  Can you tell us a little about how as a model and fitness enthusiast you transitioned into acting and became attached to your latest project, Roads Trees and Honey Bees?

Out of college I immediately fell into modeling, where I obtained worldwide recognition. From this recognition I was offered a cameo in a feature film. This is where it all changed for me. I was very excited to be in my first movie. Once I got to the set, I was greeted and guided to wardrobe. The wardrobe was located in the back of what felt like a large, very upscale semi-truck. Once I was fitted in my wardrobe I waited in my own trailer until they were ready for me on set. I was getting treated so well and was loving the flow of set life. Everyone was on walkies and in constant communication to make sure the set was running smoothly. Once I made it to set, I got the full experience. Everyone was like a family. I fell in love with being included in this family that was working in harmony for a much larger purpose. I wanted to have a bigger part of that; I wanted to help more. I had one scene, but I was hooked. Watching the actors do their skill live and in front of the camera caused me to be inspired. Once I left set, I went on a mission to become an actress. I studied in classes, read books and started auditioning. I had no idea what I was getting into but did realize that this was going to be a job and skill I looked forward to working on forever.

This latest project, Roads Trees and Honey Bees, is out now on many different video streaming platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Youtube, Xbox, Playstation and DishTV. I love this movie so much because it has a positive message and keeps you laughing. We all get stuck in life or the drama and have dreams that we want to accomplish, but we are often standing in our own way of accomplishing these dreams. Making constant excuses that cause us to miss out. This movie reminds us that it is never too late to follow your dreams or start a new one. Just decide and go for it!

Q: What were you like as a child? Were you into a lot of sports and activities?

As a child I was very active. I also loved to talk. I remember always getting my name on the board because I wanted to chat with everyone. Real social butterfly. Still am. I just had so much energy and I found a great way to get it all out was playing sports. My father and I would always play catch or watch and talk about sports. It was/is a great bonding tool for us that has proven true throughout my life. Being active is such a great way to build communities and friendships. I remember I would wake up at 6 a.m. on school days so that I could rollerblade around the neighborhood. This allowed me to find the kids who shared the same passions. My neighborhood became a really fun time in the morning with all the kids coming together before we went off to school. Being active at a young age has been the biggest influence on my active lifestyle as an adult. It is very important to start young and have fun.

Q: What do you do regularly to stay in such great shape?

I try my best to work out every weekday. I used to do it just to stay in shape but as I have gotten older I have realized that daily workout routines affect my mental and emotional health as well. I hold a lot of stress in my body that working out allows me to release. The benefit of exercise is endless.  Each day I can get in cardio as well as some weight training — a perfect work out day. I have recently picked Yoga back up and I feel I am reconnecting with it in a whole new way. I respect Yoga a lot more for its peace and alignment now. It has so many benefits that I used to take for granted.

Q: Through your passion for sports, fitness, travel and more, you have really built up an impressive following on social media. Talk a little about how you like to engage with all your followers and how the responsibility of that affects you.

I am so happy to be able to connect with people worldwide through my passions. Sports, fitness, travel and food have so much to offer. To be an expert on any of them requires real dedication, an open mind and consistent exposure. I am not saying I am an expert; I am just saying I see there is an expertise to be had that I respect. I always welcome other people to share what they know so that I can learn more about the things that make me happy. This is one of the great benefits of social media. Engagement is huge and I try my best to stay on top of it, but I have to say I also love not being on my phone. I wish I had someone that would run my profiles for me, but I understand that people like it to be under my control, so they get my honest perspective and not someone trying to be me. Human interaction is very important to me and I already feel that people are too involved with their phones and not their own lives, so I do encourage a lot of self-reflection and encouragement on my profile. I feel having a large following like I do means I have a responsibility to encourage enlightenment and help people grow. We should all be successful and happy. There are no excuses except the ones we make for ourselves.

Q: What are your favorite healthy and non-healthy (because everybody loves a little splurge!) snacks?

My favorite healthy snacks are always fruits and vegetables. I have recently been having cucumbers as snacks. You can literally eat them like you would a pickle. My friends think I’m hilarious when I eat my cucumbers, so I have been cutting them up as chips more. It really is hard to stick to only healthy snacks with the convenience of non-healthy snacks constantly around you, so my non-healthy snacks vary. When it comes to my non-healthy snacking it is caused more by the lack of healthy options arounds me. This happens most at the airport, when I travel to a new place or when I am with friends. I do understand that it isn’t easy to always choose the healthiest option so I hope no one thinks I am too strict on myself. I love to live. I especially love to live when I travel. I travel a lot with friends and visit friends who live in other countries so when they offer me food, I know the polite thing to do is to accept. Especially when I am traveling to my friends’ parents house, they love to feed you! Biggest advice I can give is choose organic every time and stay as far away from the bread as you can. Good luck.

Q: And lastly, where are the best places online to follow you and see your work?

The best place to find me is on my website www.missnikkileigh.com — this allows you to click on my Twitter, Instagram and Facebook through icons at the bottom of the page. The biggest platform with the most interaction is my Instagram, @Missnikkileigh. I hope to meet more of you through my page! Thank you for having me!
