Tips to Get Back Into Exercise When You’re a New Mom

By Candace Rhodes Leave a Comment

After postpartum every woman differs in how quickly they are able to get back into their regular exercise routine even after a doctor’s clearance.  Here I cover three quick tips to make that transition easier when you’re ready to start exercising again.

Ask For Self-Care Time Off

When you’re a new mom you might feel guilty asking for time off for your needs with a new baby in tow but taking care of yourself and prioritizing self-care is just as important as taking care of your baby.

Ask for help from others so that you have time to take care of yourself and fit your exercise in. You can start small with a request for a weekly time slot to fit your exercise in so you start creating a self-care routine.  Do this by asking for a regular slot a couple times a week and gradually increase the amount of time as you start getting into a routine and your body feels stronger.

Be Workout Ready

Each day can be completely random and different. No matter how well you plan it unexpected issues can derail your exercise plans while random bouts of free time can appear out of nowhere.

Most times it’s the simple things that stop us from getting our exercise in. It can range from figuring out where your workout clothes are to mustering up the energy to put them on to finding matching socks. To prevent this from happening get dressed in your workout clothes when you wake up.

What we wear affects how we feel about ourselves because clothes influence our behavior and our attitudes.  When you’re in your pajamas all day you really don’t feel like moving and it feels like it’s time to go back to bed for a nap.  But when we’re dressed in our workout clothes we feel we have more energy and we’re mentally prepared to exercise.

Starting your day in workout clothes can help you feel fitter and healthier because you’ll be more inclined to move and take action to become a person who takes care of their health.

Start Out With Walking

One of the quickest and easiest ways to ease back into exercising is simply going for a walk. We underestimate the benefits of going for walk because we don’t think it’s intense enough to give us benefits but it’s a simple, easy way to get our bodies moving again that we can do anywhere.

Walking outside improves our mood, boosts our metabolism, releases stress, and improves our sleep. Your daily walking routine can be a stepping stone into getting back into a regular exercise routine without having to think about necessary equipment, commuting, or adhering to a class schedule.

For those goal oriented mommies I suggest tracking your number of steps a day and set a minimum step goal for yourself then increase it the following week. This way you’ll gradually start making space in your schedule for exercise plans.

By apply these three tips when you’re a new mom you’ll find that you get back into your exercise groove in no time.
