Awesome Fridays 5/31 Edition Standup Paddleboarding, BBQs, Zach Sobeich, and more

Happy Awesome Friday, everyone! It’s been a lovely week and feels especially short since Monday was a holiday! This past weekend I was very active out on the water. It was my friend Jen Z’s birthday on Saturday and we went surfing up north at Malibu. I love Malibu and used to go there a lot when I was younger but hardly ever make the trek anymore. We surfed 1st point at Surfrider Beach and we had a blast. The waves were perfect – 2-4ft- and glassy. We surfed until dusk and got out of the water around 8:15pm under a full moon. It was epic.

I also took my first stand up paddle board strength and technique class this past weekend. This is where they go over the paddle techniques and drills to help make you a faster and more efficient paddler. Since my first paddleboard race is next weekend (gulp!) I thought this would be a good class to take. I am glad I did, we learned a lot!

We also kicked off BBQ season this past week! My husband and I bought our grill last summer and we love it! We had run out of propane so we hadn’t been using it lately. On Memorial Day we ran over to Home Depot and got a fresh new tank of propane, cleaned our grill, and made our first summer BBQ meal! We had a paleo style bbq with salmon, turkey, and plenty of fresh veggies from our Farm Fresh to You CSA box. So yummy!

I admit my workout and fitness routine wasn’t the best this week because of the holiday. I surfed on Monday, played soccer on Wednesday, and swam a mile today (Friday). I need to really kick my routine in high gear next week to get ready for the Pier to Pier Swim in August.

This morning I watched a video that really moved me. It is the story of Zach Sobiech who is 18 years old and told he had a few months to live. He said he wanted everyone to know that you don’t have to find out you are dying to start living. I was really moved by watching this and if you have 20 minutes to spare, I encourage you to watch this video too. Zach passed away on May 20th, 2013. Please share this message to help support his family. RIP Zach.

Now go out and enjoy the weekend and remember to live life to the fullest! Be fit. Be awesome.

What about you? Have you BBQed yet? What are your thoughts on Zach’s story? Post in the comments and let me know.
