Awesome Fridays – Title IX Day, Summer Solstice, Fitness Friday Linkup & More
Happy Awesome Friday, everyone! This is the first week that it’s finally felt like summer here in the South Bay where I live. Why? Because June gloom has gone away and the sun has been shining from the wee hours of the morning until late at night. And I mean, late. At around 9:30pm on Tuesday it was still bright outside. This week was the summer solstice so I’m guessing that had something to do with it.
In honor of the summer solstice, my mom and I attended a summer solstice meditation workshop hosted by Gurutej. Gurutej is a kundalini yoga teacher and guru here in Los Angeles. The summer solstice event was held at her home and it was a very unique and special experience. We did rituals such as washing of our hands and deep meditations. I hadn’t really done a group meditation like this in years. It reminded me how important it is to be present and look deep within our consciousness to help calm our minds. We get so overwhelmed in our own daily thoughts and lives and meditation helps provides a certain amount of mental clarity. At the end of the class Gurutej gave us prayer paper. On one side of the paper we wrote what we want to bring into the world and on the other side we wrote what is holding us back. We had ripped the paper in half and put the piece of paper with our resisting thoughts and burned it into a fire. I’ve never really done anything like this before and it was a cool experience. There was a girl in the class who took the workshop as part of her “bucket list” and filmed it for a video she’s making. I’ve asked her to send me her video when it’s complete and I plan to post it here on Fit & Awesome when it’s complete.
In other news, this Sunday is Title IX day. Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that prohibits discriminating against students or employees based on gender and it’s had a tremendous impact on women in sports. To celebrate, women’s founded sports companies Bia and Activyst are teaming up to support women in sports and help raise money for a girls soccer team funded by Soccers Without Borders. I am a soccer fanatic so this is a cause that is near and dear to me. And Bia and Activyst are both companies based here in Manhattan Beach where I live which makes them even more awesome. I plan on posting more about Title IX Day and my experience as a woman in sports later this weekend but for now check out the infographic below and the post about the cool offers for Title IX Day on Bia’s website: http://www.bia-sport.com/blog/titleixday/2013/06/

Alright, that’s all I’ve got for you today. I have been at a conference the past couple days and haven’t had much time to blog. I have several posts that I will be publishing over the next couple days about Title IX, StitchFix, and my experience with Amazon Fresh. Stay Tuned.
What about you? Have you ever meditated? What do you like / dislike about it? What has being a woman in sports meant to you? What impact has it had on your life? Post in the comments and let me know!
